Guest Speaker - South West Regional Cyber Crime Unit

For Novembers guest speaker, the Falcons had the privilege of attending an enlightening presentation by the Southwest Regional Cyber Crimes Unit. While the session extended beyond its scheduled time, we are immensely grateful for the enthusiasm and patience exhibited by our guest speaker, who graciously addressed every question posed by our members.

The focus of the discussion was the delicate balance between curiosity and criminality in the realm of cyber law enforcement. The Falcons explored the complexities of the Computer Misuse Act 1990, gaining valuable insights into how easily one can cross legal boundaries in a digital landscape that often tempts individuals to stray into illicit activities.

To underscore these important concepts, our president, Sebastian Lacatusu, facilitated an interactive experience with the "Anonymous Hacker Simulator" game. Participants were guided through a series of hypothetical scenarios, including hacking a neighbor's Wi-Fi, disrupting a noisy neighbor's party, and even spear-phishing a university to alter student grades. Following each scenario, our guest speaker elaborated on the corresponding laws that would have been violated in real life, as well as the potential legal ramifications of such actions.

This engaging format sparked robust discussions among attendees, prompting us to reflect on the implications of the skills we are acquiring at university and how they could be misapplied, ultimately jeopardizing our future career aspirations.

On behalf of the Falcons, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Southwest Regional Cyber Crimes Unit and the Southwest Regional Organised Crime Unit for providing us with such a knowledgeable guest speaker. The insights shared during this session will undoubtedly resonate with our members for years to come.
