We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the first Capture the Flag (CTF) event of the year, organized by and for the UWE CTF Falcons. Our training officer dedicated significant effort to create a challenge that was appropriately difficult for third-year participants while remaining accessible to first-year students.
The theme of the event was Incident Response, with teams utilizing Wireshark to analyze PCAP files in order to identify the Incident of Compromise (IOC). Participants were tasked with determining the nature of the attacks employed by the threat actor, as well as identifying and reversing the malware that was uploaded during the incident.
The competition featured a diverse array of challenges, including PCAP analysis, malware analysis, cryptography, steganography, and additional cryptographic tasks. Participants also engaged in creative problem-solving with esoteric programming languages such as Brainf*** and Ook.
Over the course of eight hours, the teams engaged in a spirited competition, with team3yeah and the Skringles frequently trading positions until the final moments. Ultimately, team3yeah emerged victorious with a score of 1310 points, closely followed by the Skringles at 1240 points, and team we.dontknow finishing in third place with 1090 points.
We extend our congratulations to the winners:
Winners: team3yeah (Aiden Goodman, Sophia Parsons and Tiago Moreno), all of whom will receive a CompTIA Security+ Exam Bundle and a Winners Trophy at our Annual Dinner in May.
2nd Place: Skringles (Deyontae Satar, Bradley 'Luna' Johnson, Oliver Harris and Chenoa G.)
3rd Place: we.dontknow (Patrycja Stefaniak, Liam Grady, Riaz Ismail)
Thank you to all participants for their hard work and enthusiasm, and we look forward to seeing you in future competitions!
