Byte Sized Cyber

On 10th September 2024 from 18:00 - 20:30 the UWE CTF Falcons were at Byte Sized Cyber!

Not wanting to be late to our first Byte Sized Cyber event, and with the of choice between being an hour late or an hour early; the Falcons arrived an hour early. Despite this the organiser Illyana Mullins was kind enough to let us come upstairs and get comfortable as we waited for other attendees to arrive. Whilst we were waiting and talking amongst ourselves we took the opportunity to enjoy the soft sofas and the swing seats that overlook Bristol river.

As the time came closer to the start of the event, more attendees started to arrive and we started to talk to them. Unfortunately we all got too engrossed in conversation to remember to take more photos.

The event brought together experts from various sectors, including finance, healthcare, and government which helped to create a melting pot of ideas and experiences that disussed topics ranging from personal experiences in the world of cyber security, incident response, sales, marketing and finance to disussions on upcoming trends and threats and of course, the converstations eventually turned to UWE CTF Falcons.

We talked about our mission to bridge the gap between academia and industry to most of the people in the room including but not limited to; Adam Harrison, Ivaylo Yankov, Russ Taylor, Ahmed Elmayyah, Chantel Daniels, and Illyana Mullins. Everyone expressed their support for our mission and wished us luck with our society.

Around halfway through the event, Jane Hargrave gave a presentation on how Cyber Security teams and Marketing teams need to work together.

Her talk consisted of informing us of how many marketing tools Cyber Teams aren't aware of that are being used in their organisation, with the average number of tools being 12.

She also talked about how some marketers will use LLMs to make their work process more efficient without understanding the risks or clearing it with the Cyber team.

She ended her talk with a Q&A during which many of us in the room asked her opinion on how we should approach the marketing teams to ensure we don't ruffle any feathers and can still keep systems secure, overall everyone in the room agreed that both sides need to communicate with each other more openly and understand that at the end of the day we're all just doing our jobs and we should assist each other where possible i.e don't use an LLM, use this internal Python script instead.

Just before the free pizza arrived we talked to Chantel Daniels and Illyana Mullins about UWE CTF Falcons, Chantel Daniels was very happy to hear what we as a society have set out to do and directed us towards UKC3 which also strives to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

Meanwhile, when telling Illyana Mullins about our society she was very excited about it and wished that we had told her sooner so she could have gotten us up on the stage to present to the Byte Sized Cyber crowd.

As the night came to a close, we wished everyone a safe trip home and hoped to see them at the next event, every one of the falcons who attended had a wonderful time and we can't wait for the next event, with most of us signing up to attend the next event later that night.

Everyone at UWE CTF Falcons would like to extend a warm thank you to Chantel Daniels and Illyana Mullins, as without them this event wouldn't have been possible.

We hope to see everyone at the next one!
