BSides Bristol 2024

The Falcons went to a bunch of different talks at BSides, one of these talks was about "dissecting the disillusionment of junior testers expecting a corporate world CTF."

During this talk the presenter, Nigel linked here  discussed training hackers vs testers, the culture of discussing tests, and unspoken expectations in corporate.

We here at UWE CTF Falcons wholeheartley agree with the points made in this talk, one of the main reasons this society was founded was to help bridge that gap between academic and industry, and whilst we help to bridge that gap using CTF's, we also help our members establish connections with industry professionals to help close the gap between CTF and industry.

Throughout the day Falcon members went to different talks, but where we all eventually ended up was in the lockpicking village. where we met some amazing people such as Andrew Harding linked here and Keelan Brady linked here.

Falcon members successfully picked all sorts of locks, from 2 pins to 5 pins with basic anti-pick technology.

Unfortunately we never caught the name of the person running the lockpicking village, but we would like to thank him for setting it up and introducing our members to picking locks. The village was a fun and relaxing enviroment where anyone could sit down and talk to those next to them and build relationships with other like-minded people ranging from other students to industry professionals. And if it is running again next year, we will definitely be returning!

The Falcons also bumped into Joe Gardiner who they originally met at the BrICS CTF back in June 2024 linked here and we are happy to say that he is getting better and we hope to see him again soon!

Everyone at UWE CTF Falcons wish to thank BSides Bristol for putting this all together, we would also like to thank each volunteer for all their hard work to make sure BSides Bristol 2024 ran smoothly.

And we look forward to coming back again next year!
